One Man's Notes

It's not our attention that's being monetised, it's our data

The Centre for Human Technology doesn’t want your attention:

What the Center identifies as the ‘monetization of attention’ is, actually, the extraction of personal data. (Curiously, they do not use the phrase ‘big data’, or ‘your personal data’ anywhere in their website text.) This attention (or, personal data) is extracted from our digital and analog behavior and then is used to profile and target us to sell us lies, misinformation, or worsen our depression by showing us advertising for make-up.

I’m beginning to regret moving One Man & His Blog to WordPress. It’s got so “heavy" that posting increasingly feels like a chore. Maybe it’s time to work on that move to Ghost.

Blogging: not dead yet.

I find this interview with Kottke to be hard going. I don’t — and possibly can’t — accept the general theme that blogging is “over”. It manifestly isn’t, but perhaps the school of blogging he represents is. And besides, what blogging brings to the internet is too valuable to allow it to die.

It needs to be fought for.

Avast there, me lubbers

Freaky - Twitter appears to be blocking posting of blogspot.co.uk domains (but not blogspot.com):

If I ever write a headline that starts “We need to talk about…” you have my full consent to give me a good slapping.

Pretty sure this ridiculous display of journalistic pettiness and arrogance is symptomatic of the reasons people don’t trust journalism.

Had a little play with the DJI Osmo Mobile 2. Nice little gimbal. Here’s a little footage shot with it

All you need is… #love #valentines #valentinesday

Gimbal time. #djiosmomobile2

HomePod: I’ve just spent the last two hours listening to music and drinking red wine. It’s been a long time since I did that.

Just switched to listening to some gentle, evening-friendly classical on the HomePod, and clarity of the sound, the degree to which you isolate individual instruments, is really quite impressive.

HomePod first impressions: really fantastic sound, Siri better than expected, works fine for me and my five year old, but poor old 2 year old Iris is not recognised at all.

Home is where the Pod is…

Big sky day.

As a middle-aged dad of daughters, falling to the dark side has taken on a new and terrible name: going full brony.

My HomePod has shipped.
